Blue mountain Jamaican coffee

The first coffee seedlings to be planted here were brought by the Hispaniola in 1728 when Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes authorized the planting. By the 19th century Jamaica was the leading coffee producer in the world but slave owning countries like Brazil and Cuba proved tough to beat in the world market.

90% of the crop is now exported to Japan and the growth of it is under the CIB’s watch.

Jamaican blue mountain coffee beans

The Jamaican blue mountain coffee beans can be classified based on three quality classifications based on the size of the bean, all sizes of the bean at 96% for sizes from 17/18 down and 2% for visible defects on the grade 1, 2 and 3.

The 4th grade is the pea berry which is a bean with no split and the 5th grade which is fancily known as Blue mountain Triage is a mix of grade 1, 2, and 3 and with up to 4% defect margin.

Under no circumstance will you find the elephant, black or sour beans allowed. The beans are known for aroma which is intense, sweet taste and a good feel in the mouth.

The coffee berries are mostly bluish - green and are uniform in size. The peaberry is a kind of coffee bean that has a natural growth of up to around 5% of its time.

It is considered a defective bean due to its single fused pea shape instead of being in two halves. Despite the odds the pea berry is the mother of flavors and most drinkers refer to it as the caviar of coffee.

It is expensive compared to other coffee, while in some areas it is discarded as defective
